After nearly a year and a half
of listening to blessings
every night before dinner
having declined previous invitations
and opportunities to give voice
to the song in his heart,
of his own accord, Thomas
decided that he would say
the blessing for Cadence’s
first Christmas dinner.
He took his father’s hand in his,
reached across the table to clasp mine,
we in turn completed our intimate
family circle by softly holding
each of Cadence’s tiny arms.
Thomas began by saying, “Thank you
for making this lovely meal, mom,”
he paused to gather the gifts of giving,
“I am thankful for my lovely family,”
tears moved waves of silent laughter
through my body as he continued with grace,
“Thank you to the Earth, the Sun,
the Rain, and all the people
who helped bring this food to our table,
Thank you for such abundance,”
he smiled, beaming with shameless pride
as only a three year old child can,
basking in the grace of this simple,
daily act of gratitude,
he finished simply saying “blessings.”
Awe....
